Abstract

The relevance of this research is to help better understand the importance of resilience in occupational therapy graduate students and how complementary health approaches and integrative health (CHAIH) techniques can be used as strategies to build resilience for students’ personal lives and future professional experiences. The purpose was to explore the perceived feelings of resilience of first-year doctoral occupational therapy students before and after utilizing complementary health approaches and integrative health (CHAIH) techniques. This phenomenological, qualitative research study consisted of a pre-course survey and post-course survey during a seven-week course, Mindfulness Practice and Wellness I. The study took place at a college graduate center at a private, educational institution. This study had twelve participants. Inclusion criteria included being a first-year student of the occupational therapy program, any gender, and over the age of 18. Participation was voluntary. The notable themes found from the results using in vivo coding for data analysis of the survey results included increased use of complementary health approaches and integrative techniques and increased knowledge of resilience. The conclusion of the research found that there was an increased understanding of resilience and an increased use of the CHAIH techniques learned within the course to help build resilience.
