Abstract
The central role of school counselors is helping students navigate the K-12 environment as well as setting them up for success in their future endeavors. As outlined by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA, 2019), school counselors play a critical role in academic planning, career planning, and the evaluation of students’ post-secondary plans. Post-secondary planning can be overwhelming for many students. Many school counselors are advising from a one-size-fits-all approach, guiding students to apply to and attend college, pushing the question of “what do you want to be when you grow up?” to hopefully be answered during students’ college years. Vocational schools offer students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in specific industries and start building their career knowledge. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role vocational education plays in economic growth by helping students make informed decisions about post-secondary options. From this study, the goal would be to uncover why students choose vocational schools and what influences students’ decision making so school counselors can better support all post-secondary options. The study included in-depth interview data from seven alumni from the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical School District. Interviews were conducted on Zoom, and participants were asked open-ended questions designed to understand why they chose to attend a vocational school, their level of satisfaction with attending, and their perceptions of what they got out of their experience. Student responses also help the vocational education industry to understand how they can continue to adapt and appeal to the next generation of skilled workers. The alumni’s responses were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using a grounded theory approach. The analysis of their interviews produced three major categories: perceptions of vocational schools, vocational experiences, and school counselor experiences. Implications for professional practices and recommendations for future research are provided.
