Introduction [excerpts]

The Italian fascist state evolved and in the same breath deteriorated immensely between the years from 1922, with the Fascist March on Rome, to 1943, with Benito Mussolini's fall from power. From the onset, the fascist government attempted to make a permanaent place for itself in Italy, with Mussolini as its leader. In so doing, Mussolini attempted to fascistize the country and create a future nation of fascists, begining with the young generation....

A very detailed and complex plan was necessary in order for Fascism to truly take its hold on Italian society. This plan was to be executed at the expense of the unsuspecting youth, who served as pawns in Mussolini's plan to transform Italy into a fascist nation. What were the changes, which occurred within and around the educational system that aided the creation of a more fascist learning environment? To what extent did Fascism take advantage of the naivety of the Italian youth and then attempt to control their minds and behaviors, in order to transform them into the fascist generation of the future? How differently were the elementary, secondary, and university students affected by fascist propaganda and by the new institutions created to mold them into fascist men and women? These questions are essential to understanding the depth of fascist hold on Italian society, in this case its youth.
