Preface [excerpts]

In 1952 I was a year old and spent my first summer on Long Beach Island. I have spent every subsequent summer there with the exception of my four years of active service in the United States Navy. For the past thirteen years I have been fortunate enough to live on the island year round while teaching history at Southern Regional High School, located across Barnegat Bay in the town of Manahawkin. Each year brings an increasing appreciation for the special geopgraphy and rich history of coastal Ocean County....

In my study of local history, I noticed that a great deal has been written about the home front during World War II, but scant attention has been paid to World War I. My students seem to find the study of the Great War and its national and international impact interesting, and over the years I have always wondered what was going on in this area. How did "locals" feel about intervention, isolation, Wilson, the sinking of the Lusitania, German submarine warfare, and other war related issues that were being played out on a grander national scale? Just as important, did the war bring tangible change to the area during and after the war? These were the essential questions that peaked [sic] my interest. My initial investigations indicated that if I were to find answers to these questions I would have to be the one to do the historical detective work since no one on the local scene has written much about the subject.
