Abstract

In the history of liberalism and conservatism, are two important individuals by the name of John Locke and Edmund Burke. These men would write works which were not only influential in their time, but also in today's modern world. This thesis will look at their differences and similarities within the context of their time by looking at some of their writings, which they had published during their lifetime in order to help understand their political and religious views. It is important to realize that, though they lived in separate times, there was an interconnection between an individual's political and religious beliefs. If we use the interconnection between one's religion and politics, would terms such as father of liberalism or father of conservatism be relevant titles? On the other hand, perhaps these labels are in a way misleading in today's modern society. Nevertheless, for historians to understand what influenced their political and religous thoughts we must also look at the upbringing, education, and the historical events of their time.
