Introduction [excerpt]

The use of program-length commercials and host-selling commercials creates a great opportunity to influence children and create a mass culture of consumerism. The study of such commercials is paramount to the field of Communication because such sales techniques utilize the media for a purpose other than serving the public good. It is important to note whether or not the audience perceives commercial content in certain television shows because the potential does exist for individuals to be blindly taken in by marketing in disguise. Furthermore, one must endeavor to uncover whether or not parents understand that they are the target audience of a marketing campaign that uses their own children as salespeople.
