Criminal justice knowledge : a comparative study of Bangladeshi American immigrants and native-born Americans, 2009

Item — Call number MU Thesis Dat
Identifier: b2195474
Preface Numerous studies have examined political influences on immigrants' communities' allocations of fiscal and personnel resources for policing, and public opinion or public confidence in the criminal justice system. Rational theory maintains that resources are distributed in accordance with the need for crime control whereas the conflict theory argues that they are allocated with the aim of controlling racial and ethnic minorities. Existing research more consistently supports the conflict...

Critical incident stress management for law enforcement officials, 1999

Item — Call number MU Thesis Odo
Identifier: b2087904
Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between critical incident involvement and levels of critical incident stress. A critical incident is defined as an event faced by emergency personnel which causes them to experience unusually strong emotional reactions. These reactions have the ability to interfere with the officer's ability to perform his duties either at the scene or subsequently. Critical incident involvement is divided into four categories: personal, for...

Deep learning : real-time American Sign Language recognition and speech, 2018

Item — Call number MU Thesis Alj
Identifier: b7817592
Abstract

This thesis addresses the issue of recognizing the hand signs of American Sign Language utilizing deep learning artificial intelligence techniques. The recognition rates of sample data was measured after sample data was prepared in one of three ways: normalizing the image, coverting to binary black and white, and color with background removed. Of the three, this thesis showed that recognition is best with color and background removed.

Design and simulation of a pipelined arithmetic and logic unit, 2002

Item — Call number MU Thesis Gok
Identifier: b2089047
Abstract Modern microprocessors are designed to execute arithmetic and logical instructions in one clock time. Emerging microprocessors implement multimedia instructions as part of the Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) and expect to run them in a single clock cycle. Designing circuits to implement multi-media instructions that execute in a single clock cycle poses a serious challenge to microprocessor designers. Sustained performance of the Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU) is very critical to the...

Design of a station-centric network model for evaluating changes to the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard, 1999

Item — Call number MU Thesis Par
Identifier: b2087957
Abstract Local area networks allow multiple computers to communicate within a single building or campus area. The IEEE 802.3 standard defines Ethernet, the most widely used local area network technology. Recently, the IEEE 802.3 working group has been reviewing possible additions to the Ethernet standard. The Binary Logarithmic Arbitration Method (BLAM) defines an enhanced medium access control (MAC) algorithm that reduces frame delays and improves fairness and thus better supports multimedia...

Design of an adaptive filter to cancel feedback noise in a public address system, 1998

Item — Call number MU Thesis Vaj
Identifier: b2087985
Abstract

The design of an adaptive filter to remove feedback noise from a public address system was attempted. The ADSP-2111 digital signal processor chip was used to implement this filter. The least mean squares adaptation algorithm was implemented in the software. Programs were developed to both pass an unmodified signal and to filter the signal for the removal of the noise. Possible reasons for the failure of this project to achieve its objective are given in the conclusion.

Designing a personal communication system for the city of Pune, India, 1998

Item — Call number MU Thesis Doi
Identifier: b2087783
Abstract A Personal Communication System (PCS) is designed for the city of Pune, India using the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) standard. Even though Wireless Communication is a vast area for study, the important aspects of PCS system design are covered. While designing the PCS system, study of the geographic area, and the atmospheric and climatic conditions is very important. Pune has a very good atmosphere throughout the year. The Monsoon (rainy season) is moderate and will...

Developing a PC-based infrared voice-activated television remote controller, 2000

Item — Call number MU Thesis Van
Identifier: b2087784
Abstract This paper presents the results of a graduate research project that is required in partial fulfillment for obtaining a Master of Electronic Engineering degree from Monmouth University. The objective of this project was to investigate the infrared (IR) signal characteristics for a television remote control and to analyze techniques for developing an IR interface between a personal computer (PC) and television. The paper describes an approach and the challenges associated with creating this...

Differences in public speaking apprehension and audience distractions, 2005

Item — Call number MU Thesis And
Identifier: b2195829
Introduction [excerpt] The topic I chose deals with Public Speaking distractions, apprehension, and how anxiety, and other outside factors get the best of us during speeches. I have never been a big fan of public speaking; I have always been very nervous and have always worried about how I would perform. Anxiety seems to find me easily before and sometimes a day or so ahead of a public speaking situation. I have tried different preparation styles and sometimes that does not help my anxiety arousal. What could I...

Direct digital synthesizer, 1997

Item — Call number MU Thesis Gon
Identifier: b2088057
Abstract This report describes the theory and implementation of a direct digital frequency synthesizer (DDS). This synthesizer will be used as a high resolution signal generator with an output frequency range of 25 Hz to 100 kHz, in 25 Hz steps. The report will provide a description of the realization of the DDS control system which enables the frequency synthesis, using a computer hardware description language to configure and implement the entire control system within a single programmable logic...
