Abstract
In October of 1778 the British lead [sic] an amphibious attack in south New Jersey in the villages of Little Egg Harbor and Chestnut Neck. During this incident, between ten and thirty vessels were scuttled, burned, and sank in the Mullica River. This thesis aims to prove that the submerged hull referred to as the Phoel Wreck was involved in the Battle of Chestnut Neck and should therefore be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
