Item — Folder: Manuscript Items, Envelope: 04
Identifier: MS-2019-0004

Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter from an unidentified correspondent to a "Mr. Richardson" [possibly William H. Richardson (1864-1937), city historian of Jersey City and a leading historical researcher for the Jersey City Board of Education in the 1930s].

Dated June 1st, 1933, with a return address that reads simply "66 E. 190th Street," this unsigned and perhaps incomplete four-page letter acknowledges receipt of a prior query from Richardson about a copy of an 1850 book on algology which had been located in the library holdings at Rutgers University. The letter notes that the book, which was authored by Jersey City resident Charles Ferson Durant (1805-1873) and titled Algae and coralines of the bay & harbor of New York, illustrated with natural types, had been cited in correspondence by Rutgers University botany professor Arthur P[ierson] Kelley published in the May 13, 1927 issue of the journal Science.
