David Vogel, two letters of introduction and associated correspondence
Scope and Contents
Correspondence issued by James Crawford, an employee of Harris, Crawford & Co., "manufacturers of ladies' cloaks," located at 414 Broadway, New York. Dated December 11, 1886 and addressed "to whom it may concern," this handwritten note is composed on the HC & C letterhead and identifies the bearer of the document as David Vogel. It attests that, having supervised David Vogel "for the past 6 months," Crawford has found him to be "honest and dilgent."
Correspondence from Joseph P. Day to [F(rancis) H(enry) Wadsworth,] the captain of the S.S. Cameronia, dated March 6, 1915. Composed on Day's personal letterhead, the text of this typewritten, signed, note of introduction identifies David Vogel--then a 43-year-old en route to wartime England--to the commanding officer of the merchant vessel on which Vogel has embarked. Affirming that he is Vogel's business associate, as well as his former employer, Day asks the ship's officer to assist with Vogel's identification should Vogel be detained by English authorities for having traveled to the UK without a passport. Day adds that he has already provided Vogel with letters of introduction to United States Ambassador [Walter Hines] Page and to other acquaintances in London. Day further states that he will be asking the State Department to alert Ambassador Page to the prospect of Vogel's pending arrival.
Also included in the file is a related, single-page, typewritten note addressing the provenance of both of the David Vogel letters of introduction. An undated document that was likely produced during the period between 1968 to 1993, the note was presumably created by, and/or for, former employees of the Guggenheim Library who are identifed in the message text by first names only.
