Administrative History
The liberal studies program at Monmouth University, one of the first in New Jersey, was offered from 1978 to 2015. Established for students seeking alternatives to a more narrowly structured curriculum, the program employed an interdisciplinary approach to learning and research in the arts, the sciences, and humanities.
Monmouth's Master of Arts in Liberal Arts Program was supported by an advisory board consisting of six faculty members and two students enrolled in the Program. The board met monthly throughout the academic year for the purposes of curriculum assessment, policy review, and planning.
Among the distinquishing features of Monmouth's MALA Program were its two curriculum tracks: Professional Studies and Liberal Studies. Each track posted a curriculum requirement of 33 credits.
Professional Studies was a career-oriented option designed to help students develop knowledge and skills that transcended the requirements of the University's traditional graduate programs. Enrollees selected two areas of interest on which to focus their course work.
The Liberal Studies track emphasized personal enrichment. It targeted students who were seeking to broaden their horizons by exploring scholarship across a variety of academic subjects and fields.
