[Introduction -- excerpts]

First published in 1897, Bram Stoker's novel Dracula has become embedded in modern culture, primarily through its extensive adaptations in Hollywood films. The story tells a gothic tale of Count Dracula, a Transylvanian vampire who travels to England in the late-nineteenth century to terrorize London society and suck the blood of his unfortunate and unsuspecting victims. Written during a time of globalization, Dracula responded to social and cultural anxieties including sexual repression, technological advancement, and foreign invasion.... Since the story was so engrained in the anxieties and politics of its time, it became an ideal text for modern adaptors to mold to reflect present day issues and trends....

In the sections that follow, I trace Dracula's intertextual literary history from [Dr. John] Polidori's 1819 "The Vampyre: A Tale" and Lord Byron's life and writings to Stoker's 1897 Dracula publication. After discussing the literary influences, I move onto existing film adaptation legacy, beginning with F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu and concluding with Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992). Finally, I speculate in the coda my projections for the future of Dracula adaptations in cinema today, commenting on impending 2019 productions like The Vampyre and Dracula.
