Site identification through artifact collector pit survey : lithic use on Broad Mountain, 2019
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of theses written by students enrolled in the Monmouth University graduate Anthropology program. The holdings are primarily bound print documents that were submitted in partial fulfillment of university requirements for the Master of Arts degree.
During the fall 2022 semester (in instances where the requisite waivers were received from consenting student authors), the Monmouth University Library, together with the University's Graduate School and Wayne D. McMurray School of Humanities and Social Sciences, began providing open access to select full-text digital versions of current theses and dissertations through links to the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global website in the Library's Online Public Access Catalog. Links to these open access digital publications can also be found in the "External Documents" section under any conforming titles that are listed among the holdings itemized in the collection inventory for this finding aid.

Introduction [excerpt]
The purpose of this study is to document the upland archaeological sites located on Broad Mountain in Carbon County, Pennsylvania ....
The goal of this project is twofold: first to collect as much information as possible about what sites are present on Broad Mountain that may provide additional information about the occupation of the area during the precontact period; secondly this project will assess the method of finding and documenting small, upland archaeological sites through identifying the locations of unauthorized excavations and informant data instead of traditional pedestrian survey and systematic sub-surface testing. Analysis of the artifacts and archaeological sites located on Broad Mountain demonstrates that by comparing small upland sites with larger regional and local sites inferences about lithic use and settlement/subsistence patterns can be drawn despite limited data.
