The importance of revisiting artifact assemblages : a case study of the Turkey Swamp Site (28-Mo-305), 2016
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of theses written by students enrolled in the Monmouth University graduate Anthropology program. The holdings are primarily bound print documents that were submitted in partial fulfillment of university requirements for the Master of Arts degree.
During the fall 2022 semester (in instances where the requisite waivers were received from consenting student authors), the Monmouth University Library, together with the University's Graduate School and Wayne D. McMurray School of Humanities and Social Sciences, began providing open access to select full-text digital versions of current theses and dissertations through links to the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global website in the Library's Online Public Access Catalog. Links to these open access digital publications can also be found in the "External Documents" section under any conforming titles that are listed among the holdings itemized in the collection inventory for this finding aid.

Abstract
The re-visitation and analysis of a previously excavated site and its artifact assemblage is something that is not always as common as it should be. This thesis will examine the importance of revisiting artifact assemblages through a single case study that follows the story of some particular archaeological site, its artifact collection, and its importance to the Middle Atlantic region of the United States's prehistory. The importance of revisiting artifact assemblages is examined through the Turkey Swamp Site (28-Mo-305). The site, located within the Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold, New Jersey, was excavated in the mid-to-late 1970s and early 1980s by archaeologist John Cavallo in association with Monmouth College (now Monmouth University), Rutgers University, and the Archaeological Society of New Jersey (ASNJ). The resulting artifact collection is extensive, and consists of the recovered artifacts as well as associated photographs, drawings, notes, and other documents from the excavations. Despite some challenges with the collection, the Turkey Swamp Site and its collection is a rich source of data for archaeological analyses. The ultimate goal of this project is to use the technological advancements of GIS to analyze the field notes, excavation unit maps, and vertical deposition plots of artifacts from Professor Cavallo's pioneering excavations. By creating 2.5-D/3-D models of the individual units in ESRI ArcScene, as well as, displaying artifact distributions for as much of the site as possible using the results of point- provenience plotting in the field, new interpretations and knowledge can be generated about the site almost fifty years after Cavallo's initial excavations.
