Introduction [excerpts]

[T]he Korean War, a conflict that ... officially ended, emotionally never achieved closure for many veterans or citizens. Consequently, for the longest time, it was referred to as The Forgotten War. More appropriately, it was the overshadowed war.... In seeking to understand why the Korean War suffered from a lack of recognition or rememberance, this review will explore those forces that involved, facilitated and hindered the dedication of the Korean War Veterans Memorial.... Chapter I ... will explore World War II as being a key reason for ... a general lack of public rememberance ... which ultimately delayed the approval and establishment of an official Washington, D.C. based Korean War Memorial.... Conversely, Chapter I will also explore the importance of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to the overall Korean War Memorial development .... Chapter II will probe such key elements as the start-up, memorial design and the battles that ensued between the Penn State design team, architects Cooper Lecky, sculptor Frank Gaylord, Muralist [sic] Louis Nelson, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, as well as the bureaucratically complicated federal committee approval and vetting process.... Chapter III explores and offers answers for why this memorial was built without any specific display of servicemen names so common to other of our nation's recent monuments and memorials.... Chapter IV will deal with such Memorial controversies as argument over the essential attribution for the very genesis of the Memorial and the handling of financial contributions and copyright infringement issues that have dogged the Korean War memorial [sic] to this day. Chapter V ... will update the current efforts of the Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation ... to correct several key failings of the original memorial [sic].
