Introduction [excerpt]
The Civil War is a subject which has held the American imagination captive ever since the conflict ended in 1865. From that point to this very day countless books and articles have been published, diaries and war records have been poured [sic] over, and countless more original sources sit in lofty academic facilities and archives across the country, waiting to be read and re-read for futher interpretation. Many subjects pertaining to that by-gone era have been the inspiration for extensive scholarship. Especially with the coinciding of the one hundred fiftieth anniversary of the conflict, many of these popular topics are being re-visited once again. There are some topics, however, that have not received much discussion; one such topic is the subject of this thesis paper, which endeavors to explore the reasons why the Roman Catholic Church in the United States did not experience a split during the turbulent years of the American Civil War.
