Statement of Purpose [excerpts]
The purpose of this study is to better determine what types of housing were available, and the range of house value in late eighteenth century Middletown, New Jersey. It employs data from the 1798 Direct Tax, often called the Glass Tax, for Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey; Hanover Township, Morris County, New Jersey; and Lower Alloways Creek Township, Salem County, New Jersey....
The study has several goals. First, I hope to develop an understanding of the range of housing available to citizens in Middletown at this point. Second, I hope to determine whether distinct neighborhoods are visible in terms of architectural preferences or assessed value. Third, and perhaps most importantly, I will compare Middletown's architecture to Lower Alloways Township's, Salem County; and Hanover Township's, Morris County; and attempt to discern whether distinctive regional architectural patterns were present, which might reflect larger cultural and ethnic or geographic differences between these areas.
