Project Overview [excerpt]

Monmouth County, one of the oldest counties in New Jersey and a colony first settled by the English in 1665, is fortunate to have an historical society with an excellent library. In their collection is a series of over three hundred Bible records in folders arranged by family groups. While each record includes at least one nuclear family, most include the extended families of grandparents, children and grandchildren. Therefore, over seven hundred families are incorporated in the Bible records. Since approximately 95% of these records were and are of Monmouth County residents, many with entry dates to the mid-eighteenth century and some to the mid-seventeenth century, I felt the publication of this collection would be of great value to the study of genealogy and history of the area. It should also be noted that until 1850 present day Ocean County was part of Monmouth County.

After receiving permission from the Monmouth County Historical Association, I began work on Volume I, which would include all family records with prominent surnames beginning with the letters "A" and "B." Eventually, I transcribed two more volumes; and two other volumes were transcribed by another individual bringing the total to five volumes and ending with surnames beginning "L"-"O". The remaining records will continue to be transcribed and published.
