Abstract

The purpose of the following study was to access the perceptions and behaviors of police officers regarding various domestic issues, and to determine if those perceptions and behaviors were influenced by having specialized training, or by having interaction with domestic violence counselors. Previous criminal justice research in the area of domestic violence indicates a lack of studies that focus on police officers, rather than offenders or victims.

In the present study, which employs the use of an anonymous self-report survey, police officers in several different agencies were asked to report their perceptions of domestic violence, victims, the law, offenders, domestic violence support programs, their agency's policing philosophy, motivation to enforce law, and overall effectiveness of the criminal justice system in this area. root>
