Newspaper clippings and textual materials documenting various events that took place at Monmouth College in West Long Branch, New Jersey between 1973 and 1989. The activities represented include two campus lectures: one by diplomat and analyst Allen S. Whiting, the other by stage and screen actor James Whitmore. Also included are items pertaining to the appointment and duties of Monmouth College president Dr. Samuel H. Magill. Of particular significance is a transcript of Dr. Magill's 1989 public testimony on behalf of proposed state legislation supporting Monmouth College's efforts to secure university status.

These materials are part of an unsolicited donation received from the Free Public Library of Woodbridge (N.J.) on 2016 September 22. A single-page letter that accompanied the donation reads, in part: "Enclosed in this packet you will find newspaper articles belonging to your town that were retrieved from the Home News Tribune Morgue by our Local History Librarian. There were numerous cartons, each filled with assorted municipalities, counties and state articles. We have distributed these to the appropriate libraries with the intention of adding them to their local history archive."

Access Restrictions

The materials are open for research use. Access is by appointment only. Research appointments are scheduled by the Monmouth University Library Archives Collections Manager (732-923-4526). A minimum of three days advance notice is required to arrange a research appointment for access to the materials. Access to the materials is confined to the Monmouth University Library and is subject to patron policies approved by the Monmouth University Library. The materials may not be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan. Patrons must sign a completed Researcher Registration Form and provide appropriate identification to obtain access to the materials. Copies of these registration documents will be kept on file at the Monmouth University Library.

Researchers seeking photocopies of the materials must complete an Application to Photocopy Form. Any photocopying of the materials will be performed by the Monmouth University Library staff. The Monmouth University Library reserves the right to limit or refuse duplication requests subject to the condition of the materials and/or restrictions imposed by the creators of the materials or by the United States Copyright Act. Permission to examine or copy the materials does not imply permission to publish or quote. It is the responsibility of the researcher to obtain such permissions from both the copyright holder and Monmouth University.
