Content Description

Assorted items pertaining to the history of the Shadow Lawn estate (now part of the Monmouth University campus) in West Long Branch, New Jersey. The materials include a 16-page promotional brochure for the Monmouth Military Institute, a private academy that briefly occupied the site in the autumn of 1940. Illustrated with black and white photographs of the Shadow Lawn buildings and grounds, the brochure includes an overview of the Institute, an outline of tuition and fees, the students' typical daily schedule, a summary of the curriculum, remarks pertaining to student life, the academic calendar, school regulations, and an administrative directory. Also contained in the accession are two newspaper articles that chronicle the history of Shadow Lawn during the early 1940s. Both articles were authored by the donor of this accession and were originally published in the Asbury Park Press. Additional contents include photocopies that comprised part of the donor's research materials for the aforementioned articles and the 1989 Fall issue of The Bridge, the Brookdale Community College alumni magazine. The latter publication features a cover story authored by Jack Needle, "Woodrow Wilson: Educator, governor, president."
