Hortense Thomas West AGE: 94 • Ocean Township

Hortense Thomas West, 94 of Ocean Township, NJ passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 under the care of Meridian Hospice at Jersey Shore Medical Center. Hortense was born in Chester, Virginia, raised and educated in Philadelphia, PA. After graduation, she relocated to Asbury Park, NJ where she received her nursing degree and served as a private duty LPN to many in the surrounding shore area. At the age of 83, she enrolled at Brookdale Community College and obtained an Associate's degree in Arts. She continued her education at Monmouth University and graduated with a Bachelor's degree followed by receiving her Master's degree in 2008, at the age of 87. Hortense was an active member in numerous health and human service organizations in the Ocean/Monmouth area. She was extremely proud of the contributions she made with the Catholic Daughters of America.

She was predeceased by her parents, Wallace and Hazel Thomas, her husband of 34 years, Robert E. West and a very special aunt and uncle, Alma G. Green and Matthew Thomas.

Hortense is survived by her stepchildren: Rob West (Virginia) of Los Angeles, CA; Carl West (Dorothy Kelly) of Ewing, NJ; Francine Patricia West of Descanso, Mexico; Jean Segers (Otis) of Hayward, CA; Richard West (Saundra) of Trenton, NJ and special cousins, Charlotte (Addie) Melton and Dorothy May West of Glen Allen, VA.

Friends and family may call from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at the Ely Funeral Home, 3316 Route 33, Neptune, NJ 07753. A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at 11 AM at Holy Spirit Church, 705 2nd Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ 07712 followed by interment in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Route, 66, Neptune, NJ.
