Biographical / Historical
The United States Life-Saving Service was established formally and a general superintendent authorized by an act approved June 18, 1878. It was consolidated in Jan. 28, 1915 with the Revenue Cutter Service to form the Coast Guard. It was operated under the direction of the Treasury Department.
